Mr. DeSmet works with the US Department of Commerce’s NOAA National Weather Service out of the agency’s Pocatello office. The office is responsible for providing weather warnings, forecasts and decision support information for partners and the public across Southeast Idaho. Alex has served in a forecaster role for 3 years. He is also the transportation coordinator — and in this role works closely with the Idaho Transportation Department as well as County and City Departments of Transportation to better understand their needs. His key initiative is to support ITD towards their ‘towards zero deaths’ initiative by exploring ways to better coordinate messaging across multiple platforms to better inform drivers of anticipated weather-related travel impacts to ultimately make driving a safer experience during periods of poor weather. In addition, he travels around Southeast Idaho maintaining weather observing equipment and training weather observers. Prior to working for the National Weather Service, he worked for a company located in Grand Forks, North Dakota for 3 years, where he provided targeted decision support forecasts for Departments of Transportation across the United States. Let’s celebrate safety safely!
